What to bring and wear to Xcaret

Xcaret is a 12-hour day that moves from caves to coral-rock beaches to an open-air stadium at night. Packing right makes the difference between a great day and a sore-footed one. Here is the list, with the rules that trip people up.

Shoes: water shoes win

Bring water shoes. The underground river floors and the beach are sharp coral rock, and reviewers report that flip-flops and slide sandals are not allowed in the rivers. Crocs and other water sandals with a heel strap are the usual workaround and are generally fine. You will also walk a lot between areas, so comfortable trainers for the paths and the evening are worth packing too.

Sunscreen and the water rules

Only biodegradable, mineral-based sunscreen is allowed in the water, to protect the reef and rivers; regular chemical sunscreen and insect repellent are not. Buy it before you go - it costs more inside. Life jackets are mandatory in the underground rivers and provided free, along with inner tubes. Snorkel gear is included with Plus or rented for about $10.99 on Basic.

Swimsuit worn under your clothes; a quick-dry towel (the park only sells them); a change of clothes and a dry layer for the show; a refillable water bottle and a hand fan for the evening; a waterproof phone pouch; photo ID (passport) and the card you booked with; cash or card for extras. Leave behind: outside food and drinks, glass, drones and inflatables. Lockers: Plus ticket holders get all-day lockers in the Plus area; standard lockers close earlier, so Basic visitors should pack light.

Is there a dress code?

Not for the park: beachwear by day and casual clothes for the show are normal. Bring something that covers your shoulders for the evening, when it cools off after a day in the sun.
